September 2011- Case Of The Month!

Our September 2011 case of the month is an Invisalign and Veneer, smile makeover combo. The 31 year old female patent's chief complaint was that her lateral teeth were considerably smaller than her central teeth. She also presented with crowding on her lower arch that we corrected with Invisalign. We used the Invisalign on the upper arch to move her teeth into a position that would require minimal preparation for her veneers. After completing the Invisalign, we whitened her teeth with ZOOM II in office whitening and placed 4 empress porcelain veneers on her front teeth. The result is the more complete and natural looking smile the patient was looking for!

Gum Disease- What are the signs?

Gum Disease or Periodontal Disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. Gum disease can be easily treated if it is caught in its early stages. Be sure to contact us if you notice any of the following warning signs.

1. Your gums bleed very easily.
2. Your gums are very red, tender and swollen.
3. Your gums feel like they are pulling away from your teeth.
4. Your notice pus between your teeth when you push on your gums.
5. You notice bad breath or have a bad taste in your mouth.
6. Your teeth and bite feel like they are shifting and changing.
7. Your teeth feel mobile or loose.
8. Your partial/dentures are not fitting properly.

Gum disease is caused by plaque remaining around the teeth below the gumline. Over time the plaque and bacteria under the gumline causes boneloss around the teeth, which leads to tooth loss.

While brushing twice daily is a good start, it's not enough to prevent gum disease. Daily flossing will aid in breaking up the plaque in between your teeth before it hardens into a thick deposit called tartar. If tartar remains on your teeth for an extended period of time it will lead to chronic infection and inflammation. Once tartar is present on your teeth it can only be removed by having a professional cleaning.

Dr. Emery sees all patients for their dental hygiene check-ups to ensure that gum disease is caught early and treated properly. She will determine the best treatment plan for each patient to keep their gums healthy. It's important to follow her recommendations to avoid gum disease now and in the future.

Our August case of the month is a 36 yr. old mother of 3, who traveled to us from Boston, Massachusetts for her smile makeover. Her chief complaint was that the teeth next to her front teeth (lateral teeth) had been disproportionate to her other teeth. She initially tried to remedy the situation with cosmetic bonding but was looking for a more lifelike and long term solution. We placed 8 empress porcelain veneers on her upper arch and whitened her lower teeth with ZOOM II advanced power in office whitening. The result is a proportionate and natural smile that will look fantastic from cradle to college for all three kids.

July brought us the hot weather and one "haute" smile makeover to share with you. This 34 year old female patient came to us wanting to change her smile. She complained that her teeth were, "to small" and that her smile, "is to gummy". We proposed ZOOM II in office whitening, tissue recontouring and 8 empress porcelain veneers. The result is a fuller and more complete smile. The shade and shape we chose for her veneers not only match her lower teeth, they also compliment her facial features and peaches and cream skin tone beautifully.

Team Sugar Fix had the pleasure of working with the folks at Big Teeth Productions this past Monday. We're gearing up for the launch of our new website and thought it would be a good time to shoot some fun new videos to go along with it. We shot three different segments focusing on our specialties; Smile Makeover, CAD/CAM and Invisalign. Dr. Emery, Laney and I participated in each video playing a role similar to our positions at the office. I feel like this approach will give our future guests a taste of what their experience will be like when they visit our loft. The videos won't be released until early August when we launch the new website but in the meantime you can check out the videos we shot last summer right here. Stay tuned!

June 2011 Case of the Month!

It's wedding season and our June case of the month is a 28 year old, "Groom To Be"! Our almost hitched patient's chief complaint was that his front teeth were worn and chipped from years of clenching and grinding on a compromised bite. He came to us after undergoing orthodontic treatment to correct his bite and was interested in restoring his 4 front teeth to their natural shape and size. We suggested he first whiten his teeth with ZOOM II advance power in office whitening and then placed 4 minimal prep empress porcelain veneers. The result is breathtaking; let's just hope his smile doesn't outshine his bride!

Michelle LeBlanc, RDH joins our team this month. A graduate of DePaul University's College of Commerce, Michelle realized she'd missed her true calling after a summer internship at a public health dental clinic introduced her to the field. She entered New York University's dental hygiene program the next year and graduated valedictorian of her class in 2006. Back in her native city Michelle joined a cosmetic and restorative practice on the North Shore where she practiced for 5 years. She will be working with us on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8am – 6pm and is excited to meet all of our fantastic patients. Michelle fits right in with her bubbly personality, caring nature and abundant knowledge of cosmetic and restorative dentistry; we are thrilled to have her!

I recently came across this poll depicting the importance of our smiles in regards to , "the social arena", "business and careers', dating and marriage", and the "overall value of our smiles" and "self esteem".

1. 94% of people said they are likely to notice a person's smile when they meet them for the first time.

2. More than half (71%) believe people with a nice smile make friends more easily.

3. Over one-third agree bad teeth, overshadows the rest of a person's appearance.

1. 74% perceive and attractive smile as important for getting the job of their dreams.

2. Over one-third agree that a person with bad teeth get fewer promotions.

With Valentines Day just around the corner I've decided to talk about breath, offensive breath to be more specific. Nobody wants a Valentines kiss from a stinky mouth so I'm going to give you a few pointers on how to avoid and/or correct this embarrassing issue.

Let's start with what causes bad breath. I have listed the main culprits below.

1. Poor oral hygiene.

2. Periodontal disease - Swollen of bleeding gums.

3. External causes - Consuming alcohol, coffee, onions, garlic and smoking can all cause stinky breath.

Okay, so now that we know what causes bad breath, let's review what to do it avoid it.

1. Brush your teeth, tongue and gums daily after having a meal. Preferably with a Sonicare toothbrush

2. Floss your teeth daily. Remember to floss before you brush!

3. See your dentist every 6 months for a professional cleaning and exam.

4. Drink plenty of water.

This was one of our first cosmetic cases for the month of January and it's my absolute favorite. This 27 year old female patient had ZOOM II professional in-office whitening and 4 porcelain empress veneers placed on her front teeth. The Scoop on Sensitive Teeth

Does eating eating ice cream make you go ouch instead of mmmmm. If so, you likely have sensitive teeth and you're not alone. An estimated 45 million adults are affected with sensitive teeth.

This problem often happens when gums recede and/or cementum is not present. The gum tissue acts like a protective blanket to cover the roots of the teeth. As the gums recede the underlying tooth roots are exposed and not covered by hard enamel. Thousands of tiny dental tubules (channels) leading to the tooth's nerve center or pulp are then exposed. The exposed tubules then allow more stimuli like hot, cold and pressure to reach the nerve which causes you your tooth to zing. Think of the gums and enamel as a down comforter covering and protecting your body from the cold winter air.

Tooth sensitivity is caused by:

Brushing to hard

Age, sensitivity is highest between the ages of 25 and 30

Poor oral hygiene

Cracked teeth

Grinding and clenching your teeth

Enamel erosion by acidic foods

Dehydration from diuretics such as alcohol and caffeine

Receding gums and/or gum disease

It's almost a brand new year, so why not kick it off right and make a resolution to improve your dental health. Many people do not realize that having healthy teeth and gums reflects your overall health and well being. Not to mention your smile will sparkle from January to December in 2011.

It's really easy to make certain that you are taking the absolute best care of your smile. Below I have listed some simple steps that will ensure you a gorge grin.

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Using a Sonicare toothbrush is your best bet.

2. Use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste helps prevent decay.

3. Floss your teeth every day. Flossing is the only way to remove plaque from in between your teeth that your toothbrush can't reach.

Raindrops On Roses And Whiskers On Kittens

In case you didn't gather from the title of this post, I am going steal an idea from Ms. O (as in Oprah) and started blogging about some of our favorite things. One of my ultimate favorite things is when our clients refer their friends and family to Sugar Fix. This vote of confidence gives me the feeling that Sugar Fix might be one of their favorite things, or at least as favorite as going to the dentist can be.

I think it's really nice to share the things we love with others so they can enjoy them, and to endorse the businesses and products that are definitely doing something right.

This weeks favorite comes from yours truly and it is in the restaurant category. Cafe DeLuca has locations in Bucktown and Forest Park and the food, service and atmosphere are amazing at both locations. My husband Andy and I love eating at the Forest Park location and appreciate the idea of a solid meal in an inviting space that you don't need to be overly dressed for. The menu and daily specials always offer interesting twists on traditional Italian fare and the wine and martini lists are extensive. Both locations are on charming streets with a lot of shopping and after dinner options, if your in the mood to go out. I'm usually so full from the baked rigatoni that I'd rather head home for a movie.

Tooth loss can result in shrinkage of gums and jawbones, and up until recently there were many folks with partial tooth loss who could not live normally. Dental implants and oral rehabilitation has opened the doors and mouths with increased treatment possibilities for many patients. Let’s face it – we need our teeth for chewing functionality and to eat, not just for looks.Dental implants rely on the bone for support and are substitutes for natural tooth roots. If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, oral implants might be the right solution for you. The chance for implants to integrate can for example be jeopardized by the presence of intra-oral bacteria and inflammatory reactions. People with adequate bone level and density who are not prone to infection and can maintain the best oral hygiene would be good candidates for dental implants.There are varying types of implants that are available but the basic definition is that it is a device, or fixture, that is surgically placed into the jaw bone to replace one or several lost roots of teeth. Dental implants are designed to replace the root of a tooth. Implants are the surgically placed part which goes either into, or sits on top of the jawbone, while the actual tooth or teeth that go on top of the implant(s) are referred to as the prosthesis.There are basically two distinct phases to the implant procedure, including a surgical phase, and a prosthetic phase. The surgical phase includes all that’s concerned with getting the implant into or onto the bone and getting it ready for the prosthetic phase. The prosthetic phase includes putting a single tooth or teeth on top of the implant(s). After the implant is placed into the jaw bone, a process that is called “osseointegration” allows the bone to grow and tighten around it. This process takes a few months, but after it has integrated with the bone successfully, the next phase can begin.The second procedure includes a metal attachment that is placed to the implant onto which the final restoration replaces the missing tooth. Once the third part or the crown is screwed onto the abutment, the dental implant is complete.If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, no matter what age you are, dental implants may be your best solution. With all of the excitement at our course I forgot to blog yesterday, hence the day 2.5 title of today's blog. Since my last post we have heard some amazing lectures and met some even more amazing people. The first part of yesterday morning was lead by Dr's Nash and Rosenthal. They both gave great lectures full of new information about cosmetic dentistry with tons of before and after photos of their cases. Some really beautiful smiles were shown. We absolutely love spending time around other Dr's and teams who share the same passion we do about dentistry.

After lunch yesterday, Laney and I went to a team building exercise while Dr. Emery took in a lecture about dental implants. We all reconvened at dinner to exchange stories from the afternoon and decided that day one was a successful one.

Dr. Emery and I had an early breakfast this morning and them met up with Laney for the first lecture of the day. Dr. Kanka spoke about cosmetic and restorative dentistry solutions. Dr. Emery focuses on quadrant dentistry and places many inlays and onlays, so this lecture was especially interesting to us. After Dr. Kanka spoke we had the pleasure of hearing from the Ritz Carlton education director on how to provide the absolute best service to our patients to make them as comfortable as possible at our office.

Everyone loves a big beautiful smile but sometimes when a lip line is too high or teeth are too short we see a little more gum then we would like. In general, ideal is to see 90-100% of the upper front teeth when the patient smiles, but no more than 1-2mm of gums above the teeth.

There are several options to consider when addressing a "gummy smile", some of which can be addressed by a cosmetic dentist and some that will need to be addressed by a plastic surgeon.

Dr. Emery often prescribes treatment options such as Invisalign, tissue re contouring, porcelain veneers and sometimes a combination of the three. When then correction is simply out of our scope we will refer our patients to Dr. Julius Few at The Few Institute For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for further consult on treatment options. Dr. Few is also our go to resource for clients who desire further aesthetic improvements that we do not offer.

Last night team Sugar Fix attended a Wired Wednesday networking event through the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce and hosted by Corporate Creations. It's always so much fun to catch up with the other business men and women in and around our neighborhood and people always love asking us all about teeth.

Tooth loss can result in shrinkage of gums and jawbones, and up until recently there were many folks with partial tooth loss who could not live normally. Dental implants and oral rehabilitation has opened the doors and mouths with increased treatment possibilities for many patients. Let’s face it – we need our teeth for chewing functionality and to eat, not just for looks.Dental implants rely on the bone for support and are substitutes for natural tooth roots. If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, oral implants might be the right solution for you. The chance for implants to integrate can for example be jeopardized by the presence of intra-oral bacteria and inflammatory reactions. People with adequate bone level and density who are not prone to infection and can maintain the best oral hygiene would be good candidates for dental implants.There are varying types of implants that are available but the basic definition is that it is a device, or fixture, that is surgically placed into the jaw bone to replace one or several lost roots of teeth. Dental implants are designed to replace the root of a tooth. Implants are the surgically placed part which goes either into, or sits on top of the jawbone, while the actual tooth or teeth that go on top of the implant(s) are referred to as the prosthesis.There are basically two distinct phases to the implant procedure, including a surgical phase, and a prosthetic phase. The surgical phase includes all that’s concerned with getting the implant into or onto the bone and getting it ready for the prosthetic phase. The prosthetic phase includes putting a single tooth or teeth on top of the implant(s). After the implant is placed into the jaw bone, a process that is called “osseointegration” allows the bone to grow and tighten around it. This process takes a few months, but after it has integrated with the bone successfully, the next phase can begin.The second procedure includes a metal attachment that is placed to the implant onto which the final restoration replaces the missing tooth. Once the third part or the crown is screwed onto the abutment, the dental implant is complete.If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, no matter what age you are, dental implants may be your best solution. They are a long-lasting and pleasing alternative to missing teeth.

Summer Fun

I'm sad to say it's been way to long since my last post. Perhaps it's because team Sugar Fix has had a really busy couple of months.

Starting in June we attended two continuing education courses presented by Dr's. David Hornbrook and Bill Blachford. We were coached on the latest and greatest ways to take the best possible care of our patients and how to have fun in the process. It's always amazing to spend sometime away from the loft to gain a new perspective on how to improve it.

Early July brought some serious rain storms and a summer vacation for the team. Dr. Emery enjoyed some time at home with her family while Amy vacationed in Mexico only to find more rain. We also welcomed Laney to our team, she will be Dr. Emery's new clinical coordinator. She brings a ton of enthusiasm and energy to the office and our patients who have had the pleasure of meeting her all ready love her. Our most exciting event this summer has to be our video shoot with the Big Teeth Productions crew. We shot a three minute video featuring all of us explaining what Sugar Fix Dental is all about. Stay tuned to our website for the big reveal sometime next month.

Dare I say that Spring has sprung in Chicago? It seems the second we assume we're out of the winter woods we get the biggest Spring storm Chicago has ever seen. I'm going to take my chances and fill everyone in on what team Sugar Fix is looking forward to in the coming months.

We just returned from an amazing continuing education course with the Academy of Comprehensive Aesthetics in Tampa, FL. We all came home energized and excited to make this year amazing by incorporating some new services and continuing to provide the best patient care and education possible.

In April we will be attending the DOCS program for Oral Sedation Dentistry. Upon receiving this certification we will be able to offer patients the ease of having all their dental work addressed in one or two visits. This service is invaluable to those who suffer from dental anxiety or are simply short on time.

May will bring Spring flowers and our Invisalign open house. On Tuesday, May 18th we will be offering complimentary Invisalign consultations and $500 towards a full Invisalign treatment package. Space will be limited so be sure to contact us to reserve your personalized consultation time.

Here we are in August and it seems summer has finally arrived. These are the hot and muggy days us Chicagoans are used too. The good news is that it's nice and cool inside our loft and we have been keeping really busy this summer. Notice the lack of blog posts.

In early July we hosted a "Wired Wednesday" networking event with the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce and had an excellent turnout. We met some really wonderful business men and women from in and around the community, and had a great time hosting everyone.

We also welcomed a new team member to the Sugar Fix Family. Rima, a dental hygienist, joins us on Friday and Saturdays and fits in beautifully. She has exceptional patient manner and is thorough and informative in her work. She truly enjoys her profession and it shows.

With fall around the corner be sure to keep your eyes on us. We will be gearing up for some more events and looking forward to seeing everyone.
